No Malcolm X in my history text, why is that? ‘Cause he tried to educate and liberate all blacks.

Why is Martin Luther King in my book each week? He told blacks, if they get smacked, turn the other cheek.

Things no one tells you:
Having sex doesn’t make you a whore.
Not having sex doesn’t make you a saint.
You don’t have to have kids if you don’t want to.
You are the only person who has rights over your body.
You are no one to judge others.
“Femininity” is not anti-feminist.
Verbal harassment is not flattery.
If something makes you uncomfortable, you don’t have to endure it.
You don’t deserve maltreatment.
You don’t owe anything to anyone.

Though no one would ever think of using the term honor violence (we reserve that descriptor for brown people who live somewhere else, motivated by religious something-or-other or tribal something-or-other), one-third of women murdered every year in the United States are killed by their intimate partners. In 2005 that amounted to 1,181 women, or three women every day. To put that in perspective, the UN estimates there are 5,000 honor killings every year in the entire world. 5,000 in a world of 6 billion versus nearly 1,200 in a single country of 300 million. In other words, a woman in America runs a greater risk of being killed by her husband or boyfriend than a woman in Pakistan.

i have always been a little annoyed by the whole ‘who cares if two people of the same sex are together? as long as they love each other, why does it matter?” thing, because, like, who gives a fuck if they love each other? ‘love’ seems to be attached to this really specific idea of what constitutes…

“Dr. King’s policy was that non-violence would achieve the gains for black people in the United States. His main assumption was that if you were non-violent, if you suffer, your opponent will see your suffering and will be moved to change his heart. That’s very good. He only made one fallacious assumption. In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience.” -Stokley Carmichael

This is the most obvious thing in the world, but I never thought about it that way until now. Yet another reason for me to question non-violence in certain contexts…
